Record-Breaking First Half: Historic Number of Dismissals in Bayern vs. Darmstadt Match

There were no goals in the first half between FC Bayern and Darmstadt 98 on Saturday – but it was a first in the history of the Bundesliga.

Three dismissals before the break: Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich (left) as well as Darmstadt’s Klaus Gjasula (m.) and Matej Maglica

Joshua Kimmich was first hit on Saturday: The national player, who had handed over the captain’s armband to the goalkeeper when Manuel Neuer returned as announced, pulled Marvin Mehlem to the ground shortly before the penalty area in the fourth minute and was shown a red card by the referee Martin Petersen. A sending off that already broke a record in the Munich club’s history – only another Munich player, Markus Babbel, had to leave the field so early in October 1997 (in the 3-3 draw against VfB Stuttgart).

FC Bayern seemed to have to play outnumbered for a long time against the Lilies, but after a good quarter of an hour the equal number was restored. Klaus Gjasula was also the last man to bring down Konrad Laimer just before the penalty area. Petersen pulled out the red card again – this time after VAR intervention.

Shortly before the break, the Munich team suddenly found themselves in the majority. This time Petersen sent Matej Maglica off the field early after the Croatian’s Harry Kane couldn’t be stopped fairly. Petersen had unintentionally achieved something historic. For the first time in the history of the Bundesliga there were three sendings off in the first half of a game.

While it continued after the break with ten Munich players against nine Darmstadt players – and then also with goals – the game was still far away from another Bundesliga record. The game with the most dismissals remains the duel between Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Dresden (4-0) in the 1993/94 season. Five players had to go down before the final whistle. However, referee Manfred Schmidt only drew a straight red card twice. He showed yellow-red three times.
