Nobody offends Johann Plenge when he is described as an unknown in German football. Plenge is obviously happy not to have to be in the front row. However, on Saturday evening, after the 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich, this could not be avoided. Plenge was visibly uncomfortable.
So there he stood in the belly of the Leipzig Arena and had to explain what is difficult to explain: the expulsion of Max Eberl, who until Friday was Plenge’s running mate as managing director. Plenge had a lot of trouble; his explanations repeatedly revolved around the word “commitment”.
