Raphael Guerreiro’s Injury Woes Continue at FC Bayern

It wasn’t until the end of September that Raphael Guerreiro finally celebrated his competitive debut for FC Bayern after recovering from a torn muscle in the DFB Cup against Preußen Münster. Coach Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the return of the new signing from BVB and sang his praises.

But just two weeks later, the Portuguese is injured again! Before the record champions’ 3-0 win against SC Freiburg, Tuchel expressed his disbelief: “We all can’t believe it. He somehow sustained the injury between practices.”

An internal club medical examination revealed that Guerreiro had suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh. Due to the injury, the 29-year-old did not travel to the national team during the current international break.

Guerreiro at FC Bayern: “A very important player for us”

“That’s bitter, of course,” complained FCB sporting director Christoph Freund: “Rapha fought hard and played a great half in Leipzig. That’s really bitter for him because he’s a very important player for us. We hope it doesn’t take too long.”

Bayern officials therefore have no doubt that Guerreiro can play an important role due to his abilities. After all, the 2018 European champion recorded an impressive 90 goals in 224 competitive games wearing the Borussia Dortmund jersey.

But shortly after his move from BVB to Bayern, the all-rounder was injured for the first time in the training camp at Tegernsee and missed the rest of the preparation and the start of the record champions’ season.

He has now played a total of 72 minutes, but his recent hamstring tear could keep him out of action until November.

According to Sky information, Guerreiro returned to running training on Friday and completed a few easy laps on the FC Bayern training ground.

94 missed games: Long medical record at BVB

Unfortunately, the fact that the Portuguese’s body goes on strike more often is a well-known problem, as his medical records show. According to transfermarkt.de, Guerreiro missed a total of 94 competitive games for club and national team in seven years at BVB due to over 20 different injuries.

In addition to an operation on his ankle in his second year at BVB, muscular problems in various places thwarted his plans.

The search for the reasons for Guerreiro’s injury misery also brought his diet into focus.

In March 2019, the then BVB star asserted on the club’s own TV: “I have changed my diet. I had a little too much on it. I had to lose some weight. Before, I didn’t pay that much attention to my diet.”

Lifestyle as a cause of injury?

The left-footed player had also hired a private physiotherapist: “That helped my body a lot. I’m happier now and don’t have to deal with injuries as much.”

But Guerreiro was soon struck by muscular problems again. Speculation about his lifestyle arose again.

In April 2022, there was even speculation that the susceptibility to injury was one of the reasons why BVB was hesitant about extending his contract early. In addition, the bosses are said to have only been bothered by Guerreiro’s professional lifestyle to a limited extent.

Guerreiro denies speculation

The Portuguese contradicted the reports. “What unprofessional things? I’m trying to understand it,” he wrote with a smiley smile on Twitter under a corresponding post: “Nice to learn everything from the article.”

The following summer, Dortmund were keen to sign international player David Raum and for this reason informed Guerreiro that they would be open to a sale. But the injury-prone professional absolutely wanted to stay and therefore entered his final year of contract with BVB.

FC Bayern: Guerreiro reunited with Tuchel

According to SPORT1 information, BVB offered Guerreiro a new contract in 2023, but the all-rounder made the decision himself to leave the club for Munich.

He also cited his relationship with Thomas Tuchel, under whom he played in his first year with the Black and Yellows, as a reason.

“When the call came from FC Bayern, my decision was made quickly. “It’s an honor for me to be able to play for this big club,” said Guerreiro after his move. “I really appreciate Thomas Tuchel from our time together at Dortmund.”

And Tuchel recently praised the qualities of his protégé: “He is a fine footballer, very intelligent in the game. He thinks two steps ahead and is very confident on the ball.”

The only question is how often Guerreiro will be able to showcase these outstanding skills on the field in the future and help FC Bayern.
