Badminton is a sport that has stood out in recent years in Brazil and, here in Piauí, it gained more relevance with the inauguration of the UFPI Badminton Complex, in 2022. The structure is known as the largest in the Americas.

At UFPI, its conception occurred through the President of the Badminton Confederation at the time, Francisco Ferraz, and the UFPI Culture, Sports and Leisure Coordinator, professor Sergio Galan, during the 2016 Olympics.

According to UFPI’s Culture, Sports and Leisure Coordinator, professor Sérgio Galan, the University recognized the transformative power of sport, the promotion of citizenship and the institutional benefits that would come from this project. “Thus, from the beginning, he supported the understanding of sport as a valuable field of study, which enriches not only academic training courses, such as Physical Education, Medicine and Nutrition, among others, but also the fundamental values of university extension that this project provides to the community”, he emphasized.

The complex offers a training arena with six courts in an air-conditioned space, with weight training rooms, a physical assessment laboratory and a physiotherapy room. In addition to these sports facilities, it also provides accommodation, an auditorium and meeting rooms.

The project uses the most modern in terms of training and performance, being a true laboratory of experiences for students studying Physical Education, Nutrition and courses in related areas at the Institution.

Training for the Brazilian junior team also takes place at the UFPI Badminton Complex

Currently, the complex also hosts the training of the Brazilian junior team for national and international competitions with a total of 18 athletes. All of these participants receive support in addition to sports training, psychological counseling and a physiotherapist when necessary. Athletes train 25 to 30 hours a week and on vacation they train up to 40 hours.

“The construction of the UFPI complex encouraged the practice of badminton in the capital, as it provided athletes with better results in training with an equipped infrastructure and a team of professionals that offers the necessary support to the athletes. This team is made up of a head coach, a physical trainer, a performance analyst, a physiotherapist, a psychologist, a manager, two research teachers and four physical education monitors”, explained the Coordinator of Culture, Sport and Leisure at UFPI, Professor Sergio Galan.

The project constantly receives internship requests from several athletes from Brazil and abroad, as was the case in Canada, Colombia, Paraguay, Cuba and others. In addition, the place has a study group made up of professors and students from UFPI who monitor performance, receive and provide sports guidance with research and important information for the sport. “This management model has been highlighted and is considered by the Ministry of Sports to be a model to be followed by the rest of the country”, highlighted professor Sergio Galan.
