Papu Gomez Tests Positive for Doping, Banned from Playing for Two Years

Monza

Papu Gomez was tested positive for doping by the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission. The midfielder from Argentina, who is currently defending Monza, was banned from playing for two years.

ESPN reported that this case occurred in October 2022, when Gomez was still in the Sevilla uniform. He was proven to have consumed terbutaline, a substance found in drugs to treat asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

He was in the Sevilla uniform until September 1, then joined Monza on a free transfer. This season, the 35 year old player has played twice in Serie A.

“AC Monza announces that it has received notification from FIFA via FIGC on October 20 2023 regarding the first level penalty from the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission imposed on Alejandro Dario Gomez,” read Monza’s official statement.

“The sanction contains a ban on activities in the world of sport for two years. The substance terbutaline was found in the player’s biological sample. The drug was consumed to relieve bronchospasm in October 2022, when the player was still with Sevilla FC.”

“The positive result is thought to have occurred accidentally. AC Monza has the right to evaluate the next procedural steps,” concluded the statement.

Gomez helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup last December. He played twice during the tournament. He also helped Sevilla win the Europa League last season, even though he did not play in the final match.
