Angry tenants reached an agreement about their homes last night after occupying the housing association’s headquarters in Grave. They oppose the proposed demolition of 74 homes in Berghem, in the municipality of Oss. After a discussion with the management, demolition is no longer the only option.

According to Omroep Brabant, dozens of tenants walked into the head office yesterday afternoon with mats and sleeping bags. They also held up signs that read: “We’re here to stay.” The tenants are especially angry because, according to them, the decision about the demolition came out of nowhere and that consultation was not possible.

During the occupation of the office, negotiations took place with the management of the Mooiland housing association. It has now been agreed that together with the tenants it will be examined whether it is possible to renovate some of the houses. Discussions about this will take place in the presence of an independent mediator.

The action was supported by the SP. Several local councilors from the party were present and SP leader Lilian Marijnissen also participated in the negotiations. She speaks on X of a victory. “It required an occupation of the Mooiland housing association, but the demolition plans are on hold and the options for renovation of the homes are being seriously considered together with the tenants.”
