Olympic Champion Alexander Zverev Criticizes Tennis Professional Tour’s Tight Schedule

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has criticized the tight schedule on the tennis professional tour. “For ten years we have been talking about how we can make the season shorter. Only: The opposite is happening, the season is getting longer, we have more tournaments over two weeks,” said Zverev at Eurosport in the run-up to the ATP tournament in Vienna.

“The schedule is full and many top players no longer compete in all the Masters because they can’t stand it,” said the 26-year-old: “In my opinion, the direction is not right.”

However, Zverev was satisfied with his development shortly before the end of the comeback season after the serious ankle injury last summer. “If I can reach the ATP Finals in Turin after such an injury and finish the year in the top 8, then it’s been a good season,” he said. He didn’t win any of the bigger tournaments, but “on the whole I can be satisfied.”

In the race to take part in the ATP Finals (November 12th to 19th), Zverev is currently in seventh place despite a few setbacks in recent weeks – and is confident that he will be one of the top eight players at the end of the tennis season to be able to open. “I have a bit of distance from the others behind me. I’d rather be in this position than the other way around,” said the Hamburg native.

On the desired route to Turin, Zverev will compete in the ATP tournament in the Austrian capital from Monday evening. There he will meet the Austrian Sebastian Ofner at the start.
