New Orleans Saints Remain in Contention Despite Slow Start

NEW ORLEANS – Despite their lackluster start to the season, the New Orleans Saints are still in the race for the top of the Southern section of the National.

All four teams in the section lost in Week 6, leaving the Saints (3-3) just a half-game out of first place.

Quarterback Derek Carr and his offense will need to find consistency and a way to make big plays if they want to progress.

Plus, it’s not like the Saints aren’t capable of moving the ball.

In Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the Texans, the Saints accumulated 430 yards, compared to 297 for the opponent.

Carr had a season-high 353 passing yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Rashid Shaheed provided a big boost with 85 yards and a touchdown on just two catches, including a 51-yarder.

The Saints crossed the Texans’ 35 line on seven of their 10 offensive series. However, they only managed one touchdown.

“When you don’t score, there are several factors that come into play,” coach Dennis Allen said. We can probably pick our plays better, but we can also see better results if we make the plays we call. We must all be accountable. »

“We really moved the ball,” said Carr, who lamented that when the Saints were deep in enemy territory, “when you step back, you realize that not everyone was on the same page.” of waves”.

“We believe our players and our offense can do better,” added Carr. We can help the team win. »

Rookie kicker Blake Grupe missed two field goal attempts, including one from a distance of 52 yards, in the first half. Because of this, the Saints attempted fourth downs on two occasions late in the game.

Blaming the kicker, however, would minimize the Saints’ problems getting to the end zone.

They have scored just one touchdown in three of their six games. Additionally, in the 26-9 loss to Tampa Bay, they were limited to three field goals.

The Saints have scored a total of eight touchdowns in six games.

“All we can do is go back to work,” Allen said. I believe that one day things will return to normal.”

The Saints will be back in action on Thursday at the Superdome. They will host the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are undefeated in their last three games.
