New Orleans Pelicans to Utilize Brandon Ingram as Point Guard for 2023-24 Season

New Orleans has no base. Unlike many other teams, the Pelicans have opted for a scheme in which several players will assume the role of directing the game, but without any of them being a point guard par excellence.

With that plan, last year we were able to see CJ McCollum serving as a point guard for much of his time on the court. It’s not that other teammates didn’t help in creating plays, but most of the time it all started in his hands. Well, that will change for the 2023-24 academic year.

According to Christian Clark of NOLA.com, the Pelicans coaching staff – led by Willie Green – was impressed by Ingram’s growth as a playmaker last year. After not achieving a single triple-double in his first six seasons as a professional, in the last one he obtained two and averaged 6.5 assists in the 25 games with which he closed the season. The plan now is for him to spend more time as a point guard.

«You can put the ball in his hands and he makes great decisions. He finds his teammates and has the ability to score. We want to explore that path more this season,” explains Willie Green, head coach of the Louisiana organization.

Regardless of who starts with the ball in his hands, Green is looking forward to seeing how the different combinations work on the hardwood once Zion Williamson, now recovered, is on the hardwood.

«With Ingram having the ball in his hands and Zion Williamson running to set the block… what is the defense going to do? And vice versa. If Williamson has the ball and Ingram or McCollum comes. “We are playing with different ways in which we can attack,” he says.
