After years of unsuccessful efforts, the first Gaspé shooting club welcomed its first hunters and sport shooters this weekend.
“Right now, it’s really good. It is similar to that of Rimouski. It’s certain that this is the first day, there may be additions. For the moment, from what I see it’s really pleasant,” describes Marc-André Pelletier, a user.
It is inside two buildings that fans of long guns and handguns can set up to aim at targets installed up to 300 feet away. Archery and crossbow shooters will not be left out: safety nets will soon be installed.
“At that time, we will bring happiness to everyone in Gaspésie,” believes the vice-president of the Baie-des-Chaleurs Shooting Club, Pierre Henry.
The shooting range protects citizens and wildlife, while many used to go to quarries to shoot.
“It’s certain that when you shoot anywhere you don’t know where your ball will ricochet and where it will hit. Here, you look at the walls, we are 7 meters high… there is no bullet that will pass through that, that’s guaranteed” assures Mr. Henry.
New Carlisle hits the target since athletes who would like to practice according to the rules of the art or keep their restricted weapons license will no longer have to travel hundreds of kilometers. Peace officers also use the facilities to keep their skills up to date.
“We are just centered within Matane and Rimouski. People from Gaspé and Grande-Vallée can come here easily and people from Matapedia coming downhill too. How many people are you expecting to receive? Currently, let’s say we’re looking at 200, but in my opinion we’ll have quite a bit more than that.”
In the not-so-distant future, Mr. Henry hopes that the facilities located on Church Street will be able to host shooting competitions.
“We will be able to go as far as the bow and the crossbow too. It’s known worldwide, not just here in New Carlisle. It’s global! So, New Carlisle is not worse than anywhere in the province, it will not go down, we will go up a degree higher. »
