The former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) José María Enríquez Negreira suffered a spectacular fall this morning upon his arrival at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Catalonia. The former leader tripped and had to be helped by his wife and his lawyer to get back on track. His visit to the Institute of Medicine is motivated by his accusation in the case that bears his name. Negreira is accused of “a continued crime of passive bribery as an author” after collecting more than seven million euros from FC Barcelona in 17 years, which affects former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosel.

In recent months, José María Enríquez Negreira has presented to the judge investigating the case, which threatens Barcelona for alleged sports corruption, a psychiatric report that considers him “unfit” to testify in court. The former vice president of the referees apparently suffers from advanced cognitive dementia that prevents him from undergoing judicial interrogation, according to the forensic doctor who prepared the report.

Enríquez Negreira’s defense has provided the judge with an opinion from psychiatrist Esperanza Gómez, a forensic doctor on leave, which reflects that the 78-year-old former referee leader is not qualified and requests that he be removed from the case for this reason. With this new visit to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Catalonia, Negreira tries to obtain a new document that will finally free him from the process.

Enríquez Negreira did lend to the Tax Agency and assured that he collected from Barcelona for two decades for verbal reports on the refereeing of the matches played by the Barça team. The former vice president insisted that the intention was for the referees to act in a “neutral” manner in these matches.

In this sense, his testimony is key for Judge Joaquín Aguirre and the accusations that seek to determine the destination of the money delivered by Barça since, as the Civil Guard explained, neither the former referee nor his family have had a significant income from assets. despite receiving the funds.

The court suspects that there may be a crime of bribery in addition to sporting corruption, since it believes that the money was used for Barça to allegedly obtain arbitration favors from the CTA appointments that Negreira was in charge of. Thus, the Civil Guard examines the records with the referees’ scores each season, to decide who went up or stayed in the First and Second Division that they found in the registry of the Committee within the Spanish Football Federation a few weeks ago.
