NBA Star Joel Embiid Announces Desire to Compete for USA at 2024 Paris Olympics

Cameroon-born NBA superstar Joel Embiid wants to compete for the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Embiid announced his decision to Grant Hill, sports director of the US team, on Thursday morning (local time). This was preceded by a personal meeting between the two in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Embiid and his Philadelphia 76ers set up their pre-season training camp.

“It’s a great thing for USA Basketball to have Joel Embiid represent the United States,” Hill said in a statement. “Joel and I have had several discussions about his goals and I look forward to continuing our exchange, knowing that one of his goals is to play for the United States in Paris next summer.”

Last Monday, Embiid, who received the Most Valuable Player award for the first time last season, told press representatives that he was torn between playing for his native Cameroon, France or the USA. The 29-year-old center has both French and American citizenship.

Embiid could be part of a new dream team. After the United States’ disappointing fourth-place finish at the Basketball World Cup in September, numerous superstars, led by LeBron James and Stephen Curry, expressed their intention to be there in Paris.
