Viggo Mortensen’s new film, The Dead Don’t Hurt, written, directed, starring and co-produced by the Oscar nominee, tells the love story between a French-Canadian woman named Vivienne Le Coudy and Holger Olsen, a Danish immigrant. Both will intend to keep their relationship alive while the Civil War in the United States of 1860 unfolds.

The production is also carried out by the Mexican Regina Solórzano, whom Mortensen met during the making of the film Eureka, by director Lisandro Alonso, this same year.

“Viggo brought me this story about a year and a half ago, I loved it from the beginning because it is a western that, within the classic structure of that format, allows us to reconstruct many themes about the archetypes and what is usually said. in those types of stories, and it had the particularity that we could do it in Mexico,” said Solórzano in an interview with El Sol de México.

90 percent of the filming took place on location in the state of Durango, sharing some settings with Canada.

The central theme of the film is the power that women have in the midst of a revolutionary conflict; It focuses on her reunion with herself.

“The story does not focus on the war of masculinity as we have seen in many westerns, but rather focuses on the journey of a woman and what it means to survive in that time, with all the edges that the story presents,” expressed the producer.

This is Mortensen’s second work as a director; In 2020 he directed the family drama Falling. Solórzano defines him as “a great commander at the front, he is that type of person who emanates a lot of energy, he is harmonious, but at the same time objective and clear with the goals he sets for himself”; He is, he says, a director who makes things work no matter how many obstacles arise.

“Speaking of this conception of women, having a male director giving that place to the feminine part is a large part of the film’s discourse, where it gives way to a language of integration, beyond this feminism that, in the process to find her own voice, she once again divides herself from the male part, I think the film is the complete opposite,” said the producer.

Vicky Krieps, Solly McLeod, Garret Dillahunt, W. Earl Brown, Danny Huston, Shane Graham, Rafael Plana and Alex Breaux complete the cast of the feature film that Mortensen himself will present at the 21st Morelia International Film Festival.
