Messi will say goodbye to Inter for the rest of the year

Lionel Messi says he will play in Inter Miami’s last game of the current campaign on Saturday. But the club has not confirmed that plan.

The Argentine star, who scored twice for his country on Tuesday night in a 2-0 victory over Peru in World Cup qualifying, was certainly not in the Inter Miami lineup a day later, although It was possible to see him in the stands, smiling and encouraging the team.

The Florida squad was playing its last home game of the MLS campaign, on Wednesday against Charlotte.

This absence was absolutely expected. What was not expected was that Messi told the press in Peru that he wants to play once again with Inter Miami before the end of his first MLS season.

This means he intends to visit Charlotte on Saturday, even when that game takes place on artificial turf.

“I will train, I will play the game that is coming up now,” said the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player.

Since the beginning of this month, Inter Miami was left without a chance to advance to the MLS postseason. Argentine coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino commented earlier this week that there was a chance Messi would play on Saturday. He specified that the club would evaluate his physical condition upon his return to Miami, after playing two matches for Argentina in the qualifying round.

Inter Miami’s final home game came on the same day the MLS players union revealed that Messi’s annualized compensation from his contract with the club is slightly more than $20.4 million.

The MLS figures do not take into account any additional agreements with the team or its affiliates, or performance bonuses.
