Alejandro “Papu” Gomez received devastating news. The anti-doping agency informed him that he had tested positive for prohibited substances, for which he was suspended for two years. According to the Spanish Relevo, it is a sample taken after one of FC Sevilla’s November training sessions, just before leaving for the World Cup in Qatar. Shortly thereafter, Gomez won the championship trophy with the Argentine national team.

According to the portal, according to the footballer’s own version, taking doping substances was an accident. Gomez complained that he had had a very rough night a few days earlier. Due to minor health problems, he took syrup intended for his children. It was supposed to be a drug similar to salbutamol, causing bronchodilation and better lung ventilation. However, this in no way excuses the player, because he did it without even informing the club doctor.
Only Gomez himself and his then club FC Sevilla knew that the laboratory was more interested in the sample. The Spanish had a big problem. They intended to sell him to another team, but with this knowledge, they exposed themselves to potential complications. At the beginning of September, the contract was terminated, and at the end of the month the Argentine signed a contract with Italian Monza.

This Serie A season, Gomez managed to play only 40 minutes – 15 against Sassuolo and 25 against Salernitana. He will not play in the next matches. At this point he was suspended. Disqualification can still be appealed, but it rarely brings any positive results for the athlete. This may effectively mean the end of his career. He is already 35 years old, and a break will not make it easier for him to stay in good shape.
