VENICE – Rebalancing Cortina with other races? There’s no talking about it. It is the mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, who rejects the requests of the governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia. «I don’t think there are margins – said Sala -. As far as Milan is concerned, it’s all stuff made by private individuals. What do we do, give up private investments? This is the time to keep your head down and move forward.”

A heated confrontation between the two administrators is therefore expected. Zaia, after the collapse of the bobsleigh track, expects Cortina d’Ampezzo to be “compensated” with other disciplines: «It is unthinkable – he said in yesterday’s interview with the Gazzettino – that Cortina could make the Olympics with only two races , women’s skiing and curling, would also be disrespectful towards us.” And, after underlining the imbalance today in favor of Lombardy, he issued a warning in view of the vote which will have to be unanimous, at least as regards the territories, on the choice of the bobsled track: «If someone says “my belly, make a hut” , I will take note of it and behave accordingly.” But apparently the mayor of Milan has no intention of giving up a single discipline. Yesterday, on the sidelines of the “Il Verde e il Blu Festival” which is taking place in the Lombardy capital, Sala instead underlined the need to work to find a solution to the gut issue, i.e. the bobsleigh track, which is economic and not political. «I called the mayor of Cortina to tell him that I’m sorry, when the idea of bobsleighing was launched in Cortina we all knew about the delicate nature of the thing but we all said let’s try it – he said -. I stand in solidarity with them, Cortina has nothing to do with it, and I feel responsible that that was a collective decision at the beginning. At this point common sense tells us that it cannot be done.” Where to bob, then? “I would have only one criterion: where it costs less and there is less environmental impact.” Turin? “I wouldn’t want it to be a politicized decision again and, let’s face it, the risk is there.”

PIEDMONT
As for the Cesana track, the president of Piedmont, Alberto Cirio, promised the Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, to present all the technical documentation to fix the facility used in the 2006 Games by Monday. «Piedmont is ready and not can’t wait to return to host an Olympics – said Minister Paolo Zangrillo, Piedmontese coordinator of Forza Italia -. Turin is the best solution to avoid “moving” an important part of the five-circle event abroad.”
Hypothesis opposed by the Green and Left Alliance: «The truth – said Senator Aurora Floridia – is that the bobsled track in Italy cannot be built because the economic and environmental sustainability requirements are lacking, both in Cesana and Cortina. The only valid alternative is abroad and it’s time for Abodi to officially communicate it, rather than making senseless U-turns, just to please someone from time to time.”

JOBS
Aside from the bobsleigh track, which is now completely gone, how are things going with the work on the other projects planned in Veneto? No construction site has been opened, it is still in the planning phase, but, according to Simico, the Milano Cortina Infrastructure Company, the timetable is absolutely respected. For the Longarone variant, the services conference should be convened shortly, which will then allow the tender to go ahead. The construction sites should all open within the first six months of 2024. The problem, closely linked to the bobsleigh track, is instead the Cortina Variation – broken down into 111 lots compared to the initial 73 so that each “piece” of work is autonomous – for which there is no full funding. Not only that: once the bobsleigh track has been skipped, the Olympic village of Fiames – under which there will be the Cortina Variation tunnel – will be downsized and, therefore, it could be decided to do the work at the same time. But the money? The rebalancing of the tenders would also serve this purpose: to justify the financing of structural interventions for the territory.
