National soccer coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg speaks out. After her illness break, she announced talks with the DFB. The association had already prepared to possibly plan the future without her. But the 55-year-old is apparently not playing along.

The recovered national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has announced the long-overdue internal reappraisal after the German footballers’ early exit from the World Cup. “We have signaled to the DFB that we are ready for further analysis and processing of the World Cup and for confidential discussions about the way we will continue to work together in the team,” the 55-year-old wrote on Instagram. The 55-year-old continued: “We are in a trusting exchange with the DFB about this and are expecting an appointment shortly after the managing director Andreas Rettig has returned from the USA.”

The DFB had previously confirmed on Sunday that the coach, who was taking a break, was no longer on sick leave and was on vacation. “I can happily announce that, thanks to the support of very experienced and qualified doctors and the support of my family and circle of friends, I am now almost healthy and fit for work again,” wrote Voss-Tecklenburg: “I am of course very happy about that , because the last few months haven’t been easy for me.”

The DFB announced on September 8th that Voss-Tecklenburg was ill. However, she recently made public appearances and caused some astonishment. Voss-Tecklenburg gave a lecture this month both at the Bavarian Dentists’ Day in Munich and at a forum organized by the Federal Association of German Prefabricated Buildings. The association was informed about private appointments, the trainer now wrote. She is and is in regular, trusting exchange with the DFB. The DFB is informed about all the circumstances surrounding my personal situation as an employer.”

Voss-Tecklenburg’s contract runs until summer 2025

Horst Hrubesch was introduced as interim national coach last Friday. Association President Bernd Neuendorf said that Voss-Tecklenburg was being given time to recover. She was surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round with the German soccer players at the World Cup in Australia. Your contract with the DFB runs until the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland.

However, Voss-Tecklenburg now wrote that a way should be found together to “work together successfully again” and to be able to “build on the successes like at the Women’s European Championship in England”. At last year’s tournament, Germany only had to admit defeat to the hosts in the final.

However, her return as national coach has long been considered unlikely. There is said to have been criticism of her work internally. DFB managing director Rettig recently indicated that there could be a future without Voss-Tecklenburg as national coach: “We have to be prepared in the event that there is no bridge.” Voss-Tecklenburg is now being represented by a lawyer.

Sharp criticism from the players’ camp

Within the German team, before signing Hrubesch, who had already helped out with the women in 2018, captain Alexandra Popp, among others, pushed for a quick solution. The state of limbo surrounding Voss-Tecklenburg had become a burden for the European vice-champions. The selection is currently fighting in the Nations League for the Olympic tickets for Paris 2024. Hrubesch will be on the sidelines again for the first time next Friday (5.45 p.m.) in Sinsheim against Wales.

On Friday during the Hrubesch press conference, Neuendorf responded to the question about Voss-Tecklenburg by saying that he stuck to “what we have always said: We are Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s employer. We have a responsibility, we want her to recover well”. This is the most important thing, says Neuendorf. “That’s why we wait and see what happens. We have a clear agreement that we will then sit down together.” All the topics would then be discussed, said Neuendorf. “We give her this time and we give ourselves. There is no pressure exerted here in any way.”

But the players are increasingly taking over this. For example Lena Oberdorf, who recently criticized Voss-Tecklenburg. After it became public that, according to her husband, Voss-Tecklenburg was no longer on sick leave and, according to her own statement, was now on vacation, Oberdorf said: “Of course there are a few question marks for me. I would definitely have wished for something different. That they say: OK, let’s first clarify what happened at the World Cup.” From their point of view, a vacation would have been possible even after the World Cup had been dealt with.

For the upcoming games on Friday against Wales and on October 31st in Iceland, Hrubesch, who is extremely popular in the women’s team camp, is now available as an emergency solution until further notice. When Oberdorf was asked specifically whether she would like Voss-Tecklenburg to return, the 21-year-old said: “Because you have no power over it anyway, I’m just here to do my job. That’s winning two games. The DFB will then take care of everything else.”
