Magical Women: Italy Shines at Judo Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi

Magical women at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena. The curtain has fallen on the 2023 edition of the Judo Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi. On the tatami of the Arab Emirates the expected trio of aces gave strong signs of vitality and the signatures were authorial. It had never happened that in a competition of this kind the Bel Paese achieved three victories and finished ahead of all the other countries in the overall ranking.

An Italy with female traction because Assunta Scutto, Odette Giuffrida and Alice Bellandi have put their signatures in these three days, giving very comforting signals in view of the upcoming European Senior Championships in Montpellier, scheduled from 3 to 5 November.

In the -48 kg Scutto obtained his fourth Grand Slam title, after successes in Abu Dhabi (2021), Astana and Baku this year. For her, n.1 in the ranking and world bronze in the category, the confirmation of a notable status of excellence which bodes well in terms of the Five Circles. An impressive demonstration of strength, with the poor Turkish Sila Ersin hit by Susy and overturned 30″ after the start of the final confrontation.

From the freshness of the bell to Giuffrida’s experience in the -52 kg. For Odette, the 16th consecutive podium arrived in this particular competition and above all the fifth seal in the Grand Slams of her career was placed, demonstrating that the desire to confirm herself as a reference point in view of the Games is there.

And then Bellandi’s center today, in -78 kg. A phenomenal path for the 24-year-old from Brescia, sealed by her success in the challenge of pure physicality with the French Fanny Posvite. The sum of warnings at the Golden Score smiled on her and, as for Scutto, there was the fourth Slam signature, returning to savor the sweet taste of the highest podium after eight months. A victory that also allowed her to return to the top of the Five Circles ranking by 45 points ahead of Israeli Inbar Lanir, who did not take part in the competition in the Emirati capital.

And so, this ambitious Italy is ready to throw down the gauntlet, thanks to these girls animated by class and determination. Stimulating feedback for a group that, even in the men’s group, can count on top-level athletes capable of standing out. All you have to do is enjoy the show.
