FIFA’s disciplinary committee has imposed a severe punishment on Luis Rubiales, the recently resigned president of Spain. Rubiales has been banned from football-related activities at national and international level for the next three years. Rubiales came under fire in August after he kissed Jennifer Hermoso after Spain’s World Cup final win.
After the World Cup final between Spain and England, Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips, who later said that he had not agreed to this. Rubiales denied being guilty of sexual harassment, but pressure on the association president increased. After FIFA previously suspended him for ninety days and he eventually resigned, the football association issued a punishment on Monday.
“In accordance with the relevant provisions of FIFA’s disciplinary code, Rubiales will have ten days to request a reasoned decision, which will then be published on legal.fifa.com if requested. The decision may be appealed to the FIFA appeals committee,” FIFA wrote.
Spanish players decided to boycott the national team when it emerged that Rubiales refused to resign as president. “I will fight until the end,” Rubiales said several times. Ultimately, Hermoso officially filed a report. The Spanish prosecutor demanded a contact and area ban for the president.
