Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach Darvin Ham Wants Anthony Davis to Become a Three-Point Shooter

Head coach Darvin Ham of the Los Angeles Lakers wants to see his big man Anthony Davis as a three-point shooter – and not too close. He emphasized that on Tuesday.

“I want to see him make six three-pointers per game if possible,” said Ham. “I know he won’t do that, but maybe he’ll shock me.” There should be “at least three per half. I wouldn’t burden him with that if I didn’t think he was capable of it.”

Davis converted almost 26 percent of his three-pointers in the last regular season, and in the playoffs his rate rose to 33.3 percent. Since the Lakers won the title in the 2020 bubble season, Davis has statistically been one of the worst jump shooters in the league, with an effective field goal rate of just 38 percent.

“We talked about taking more threes,” Davis admitted after the preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets. “That’s the focus, the league has changed in that direction. But they were all taken in rhythm. We just want to have confidence in our shots and fire them off.” In two Preason games, the Lakers’ three-point rate is just under 38 percent, and Davis converted 3/6 attempts.

“He shouldn’t hesitate,” emphasized Ham. “Don’t think too much. When he has a good opportunity, we all encourage him to just throw.”
