Maybe it was the phase of the game. Shortly before, Leipzig’s victory against 1. FC Köln was put in jeopardy for the first and only time on Saturday evening when guest attacker Luca Waldschmidt shot against the post when Marco Rose briefly lost his nerve. After an actually inconspicuous duel in midfield, the Leipzig coach threw his cap on the floor of the coaching zone out of anger at referee Benjamin Brand, complained loudly to the referee and was shown a yellow card.
“For me it was a question of the line as a whole,” he explained his freak out after the end of the game on “Sky” and quietly criticized the referee: “After just one minute he opened a construction site for himself.” Rose was referring to a foul by Cologne’s Eric Martel against Benjamin Henrichs, which Brand did not punish with a yellow card. “Martel then had a foul on the penalty kick, then another foul and we got yellow cards relatively quickly,” Rose explained. Maybe he meant his own, because at the time of the cap toss only Mohamed Simakan on the RB side had seen the yellow card.
“I wasn’t on his line,” Rose said to the referee, to whom he said he later apologized. After the final whistle, Rose criticized his own behavior – which went beyond complaining to the referee. “I have to wonder at myself,” he said and smiled as he watched the scene repeated: “Then I put the hat back on crookedly.”

In the end, the yellow card and the fashion bump were manageable; just shortly after Rose’s warning, his team scored three goals in eight minutes and closed the bag early. “I accept everything today because the boys played an outstanding game,” praised Rose. “The coach can sometimes give in.” Because the yellow card is likely to be a case for treasurer Janis Blaswich: “There is certainly a catalog of punishments for the coach too.”
But it wasn’t just the positive impact on the team’s finances that was received with goodwill. “I think it’s cool,” said David Raum, “that we have a coach who goes along like that.”
