Lee Zii Jia Seeks Redemption with Impressive Win in French Open

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Lee Zii Jia claimed an impressive 21-15, 21-11 win over China’s recently crowned Denmark Open champion Weng Hongyang to reach the men’s singles second round of the French Open at the Glaz Arena in Rennes on Wednesday (Oct 25).

It was sweet revenge for world No. 11 Zii Jia after he had lost to world No. 19 Hongyang in the final of the Denmark tourney on Sunday (Oct 22).

Zii Jia will next take on Hongyang’s compatriot and Hangzhou Asian Games gold medallist Li Shifeng for a place in the quarter-finals.

Another Malaysian, Ng Tze Yong also made it into the second round after brushing aside Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw 21-9, 21-9.

World No. 18 Tze Yong will play homester and world No. 44 Arnaud Merkle next.

In the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie also made it into the second round.

They will next face Hong Kong’s Reginald Lee-Ng Tsz Yau and Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet respectively.
