Kelvin Kiptum has broken the world record at the Chicago marathon. The 23-year-old Kenyan crossed the line in an insane time of 2:00:35, breaking the world record of Eliud Kipchoge, who ran 2:01:09 in Berlin last year.

This now seems to really bring the completion of the marathon within two hours into focus. Kiptum recorded his third marathon victory in as many participations.

The Kenyan won in Valencia earlier this year with a time of 2.01.53. Last year, Kiptum made his marathon debut in London with a sensational time of 2:01:25, then the second fastest time ever run.

In Chicago, Kiptum left the competition far behind. Marathon debutant Daniel Mateiko lasted a long time with the later winner, but he also dropped out. Benson Kipruto came second (2.04.02), Bashir Abdi came third in 2.04.32.

Plat wheels to third place

Jetze Plat finished third among the wheelers in Chicago. The Dutchman crossed the line in his wheelchair just over nine minutes behind winner Marcel Hug.

The almost unbeatable Hug quickly took off, stayed away and won the Chicago marathon for the fourth time: 1.22.37, an improvement on his own course record.
