Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen Win French Open Badminton Final in Thrilling Third Set

The first set was a relatively one-sided game. Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were admittedly behind after the first ball, but quickly took control and won 21-14. No slouch.

The same can be written about the second set – just with the sign reversed.

Because then it was Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana who grabbed the racket and slammed back into the showdown. The Danish opponents otherwise got off to a flying start and were ahead with 4-1, but alas.

Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen seemed to stall – or save their strength for the third set – while Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana clawed at it and equalized in sets with a convincing 10-21.

Six finals = five titles

European Games: Guld

Canada Open: Gold

WC: Silver

Hong Kong Open: Gold

Arctic Open: Guld

French Open: Guld

And so it had to be decided in a third and decisive round of badminton.

Here it was again the Danish superdouble who took the lead from the start with a lead of 5-2 and later 11-6 midway through the side change.

But the Indonesians were not defeated at all. They reduced to 10-13 and later 13-16. The Danes got some fresh air by increasing to 17-13, before it became 17-15.

Soon after, the Indonesians reduced the score to 16-18 with a net roller, before Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen secured four match points at 20-16.

However, the Indonesian pair averted the danger the first two times and cut the lead to 20-18. Thus, one could easily suspect the Danish WC finalists of getting nervous. Or what? Negative.

For six finals, four months must have left Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen with an irrepressible belief in their own abilities, which is why they averted the coup and secured the French Open gold after an Indonesian mistake.
