Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum set a new men’s marathon world record on Sunday 8 October in Chicago (United States), beating that of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge in 2022 in Berlin (Germany). Kiptum finished the race in 2 hours and 35 seconds, a significant gap from Kipchoge’s previous record of 2 hours 1 minute and 9 seconds. Kelvin Kiptum is 23 years old and had already made himself noticed last year in his debut at the marathon in Valencia (Spain), when he became the third marathon runner in history to go under two hours and two minutes. The record will be formalized and certified in the next few days.
In 2019, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge ran the marathon in less than two hours in an event organized in Vienna (Austria). Kipchoge’s record, however, is not considered official by the international athletics federation, because it occurred in particular and favorable conditions: the event was not in fact an open race, but organized specifically for Kipchoge.
