Knowing that they had no chance of winning the day, four compatriots colored the early flight black-yellow-red. The tireless Dries De Bondt, Rune Herregodts, Jens Reynders and Jens Keukeleire took the plunge. For Keukeleire it was the last match of his career.
Their lead reached a maximum of two minutes. A manageable gap that never embarrassed the sprint trains.
Olav Kooij hooked his cart to that of Jumbo – Visma. For a moment, Juan Sebastian Molano seemed to become a nuisance again, just like yesterday. But the Dutchman was still able to celebrate his birthday with the day’s victory.
Still celebrating in the Dutch camp: Milan Vader took his first overall victory in a WorldTour stage race. A special victory for the Dutchman, because last year he had a serious crash in the Tour of the Basque Country and was in a coma for 12 days, after which a grueling rehabilitation followed.
The cycling team couldn’t imagine a better end to the season.
