On the first day of the Judo Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi, Mascha Ballhaus from TH Eilbeck won the silver medal in the up to 52 kg class. Seija Ballhaus from TSV Großhadern and Pauline Starke from the Judo Team Hannover (both up to 57 kg) took fifth place.
Mascha Ballhaus had to admit defeat in the final against Odette Giuffrida from Italy, third at the Tokyo Olympics, with Wazaari scoring. In the preliminary round, the 23-year-old from Hamburg defeated Ana Viktoria Puljiz from Croatia and Estrella Lopez Sheriff from Spain. In the semifinals, the German champion defeated Jessica Pereira from Brazil, winner of the Grand Prix in Zagreb this year. For Ballhaus it was the third Grand Slam medal this year after gold in Tashkent and bronze in Tbilisi.
Seija Ballhaus fought her way to the semi-finals with successes against Nicolle D Santo from Italy, Priscilla Gneto from France and Jessica Lima from Brazil. Here she lost to Jessica Klimkait from Canada. In the fight for third place she couldn’t find a way against Kseniia Galitskaia from Russia, third this year at the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar, and in the end she had to settle for fifth place.
Pauline Starke reached the semi-finals with wins against Jaione Equisoain from Spain and Kseniia Galitskaia. The fight for the final against Christa Deguchi from Canada was lost with Wazaari scoring. For bronze, the Hanoverian lost to military world champion Jessica Lima from Brazil.
Annika cube from Vfk “Bau” Rostock won two fights in the preliminary round of the class up to 52 kg and came in seventh place.
Maximilian Heyder from JC Naisa (up to 60 kg) and Martin Setz from UJKC Potsdam (up to 66 kg) each won one fight, but were subsequently eliminated from the competition in the second round. Lennart Slamberger from JC Leipzig (up to 66 kg) lost in his opening fight.
