Judo: Frascadore Wins Silver Medal, Canadian Equestrian Team Eyes Olympic Qualification, and More Updates from the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games

October 28, 2023 Judo: Frascadore fights for silver medal

Team Canada had only one medal opportunity today. Julien Frascadore managed to win the silver medal in the men’s 66kg discipline.

His first three fights of the day all ended with excellent scores. Frascadore won each of them with a Hansoku-make after his opponents all received a third Shido (penalty). In the final, he faced Venezuelan Willis Garcia Estrada, who quickly gained the upper hand. It only took 40 seconds for Garcia Estrada to throw Frascadore onto his back, resulting in an Ippon and the immediate end of the match.

“I was going into the final to win the gold medal, so it’s a bit of a flat way to end the day, but with time and hindsight, I’m going to be happy with the result and the experience that I got here” said Frascadore. “I fought him before, it was almost the same result, so I knew he was pretty strong. »

This is Frascadore’s second medal at the Multisport Games in 2023. In early August, he won gold for Canada at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. He also won gold at the Pan American-Oceanian Championships in September.

Equestrian: Canada positions itself for a podium and Olympic qualification

After the dressage team secured Canada’s place in the discipline for Paris 2024, the eventing team is ready to do the same. After the first two days of competition, the Canadian quartet composed of Michael Winter (on El Mundo), Colleen Loach (on Fe Golden Eye), Lindsay Traisnel (on Bacyrouge) and Karl Slezak (on Hot Bobo) occupies third place behind the United States and Brazil.

There are two Olympic spots available in team eventing, but the United States is already qualified after winning the silver medal at the 2022 FEI World Eventing Championships.

On Friday, Canada placed second in the dressage portion of the competition. On Saturday there was the cross-country portion, in which Traisnel and Slezak completed flawless runs within the allotted time, which helped them place fifth and sixth in the individual standings. The team has a total score of 105.2, which puts them just behind Brazil with 101.5. The United States leads with 86.2. Argentina is in fourth place, but far behind with 194.1.

The eventing will end on Sunday with the show jumping event.

Tennis: Marino plays for the bronze medal

Rebecca Marino will play for the bronze medal in the women’s singles after her semifinal loss to Argentina’s Lourdes Carle on Saturday. Unfortunately for Marino, his opponent took the upper hand early and won the first set 6-1 in just 27 minutes by managing three of the four break chances. Marino managed to do more in the second set, which lasted almost an hour, but still lost 6-4.

“My opponent is definitely a strong clay court player, she hit the ground and didn’t give me much room to breathe or try to find my game,” Marino said. “So my main goal was to try to be a little more aggressive as the match went on and find my place, get my confidence back. I felt like I did a good job, but it was just a little too late.”

Marino will face another Argentinian, Julie Riera, 21, in the bronze medal match on Sunday.

Canoe/Kayak Slalom

Four Canadians qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s C-1 and K-1 events.

Lois Betteridge placed second in the C-1 girls playoffs while Lea Baldoni placed third after the K-1 girls playoffs. His brother Alex Baldoni placed third in the C-1 men’s playoffs and Maël Rivard finished fourth in the K-1 men’s playoffs.

The semi-finals and finals of these four events will take place on Sunday, as well as the semi-finals and finals of kayak cross, a discipline which will make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024. Alex Baldoni and Betteridge will compete in the next phase of the event men’s and women’s kayak cross after placing first and third respectively in Friday’s time trials.

“After two races, I feel a little tired, but I feel good,” said Léa, the eldest of the Baldoni family. “A lot of good sensations on the water, it was smooth. Technically too, it was good. I’m excited for tomorrow, the semi-finals and the final, it’s going to be fun.”
