Jamie Leweling: A Promising Alternative to Silas, But with Room for Improvement

Jamie Leweling was recently in the starting eleven for VfB Stuttgart twice. The loan from 1. FC Union has become a real Silas alternative, but there is still room for improvement, especially defensively.

That became evident in the 61 minutes he was on the field in the 3-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg. Leweling was too unstructured at the back and sometimes too wild when pressing. It was no coincidence that the guests kept getting shots, especially on their left side, via Joakim Maehle and ex-Stuttgart player Tiago Tomas, and both Leweling and Pascal Stenzel didn’t always cut the best figure.

Offensively, however, the 22-year-old not only showed off his qualities, but also caused several dangerous scenes. The best one came in the 33rd minute, when he left Maehle standing and his cross found Chris Führich, whose shot was blocked in dire need. “Jamie has been training really well for a few weeks now, he has good moves in the final third,” said VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß, praising the flexible offensive man after the triumph against Wolves, again referring to the 2-0 win in Cologne a week earlier. when Leweling celebrated his starting eleven debut: “In Cologne he worked a lot and tactically well for us.” An aspect that Leweling struggled with for a long time against Lower Saxony.

Vagnoman returns as another option

Nevertheless, the Nuremberg native has become a real alternative to top dog Silas, although the two starting eleven mandates were also due to the fact that the Congolese was recently injured, said Hoeneß: “Silas didn’t train fully for ten days, that’s what you have to say. That led to Jamie being ahead right now.”

The coach is happy about this alternative: “Situations like this provide inspiration.” In addition, the 41-year-old will have another option after the international break in Josha Vagnoman, who as a trained right-back can also play the offensive lane after his long injury break.

Nevertheless, Silas should have the best chance of starting again on October 21st in the guest appearance at 1. FC Union (3:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker). The 25-year-old’s normally more strenuous travel with the national team of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been somewhat alleviated this time. Silas and his home country will face New Zealand on October 13th and Angola on October 17th – but both on neutral ground, first in Murcia (Spain), game two will take place in Portugal.
