Italian Masters Championship and Cadets of FOR YOU: A Recap of the Recent Events

The curtains fall on Italian Masters Championship and on that of the Cadets of the FOR YOU (the only National Sports Federation recognized by CONI for the activities of Judo, Wrestling, Karate and Martial Arts, which can therefore award the winners with the title of Italian Champion) recently held in Taranto the first and in Lido di Ostia ( Rome) the second.
Master athletes, i.e. male and female athletes over the age of 35, competed in Taranto. At the PalaPellicone in Lido di Ostia the male and female Cadets (year of birth 2009 – 2008). 159 Master athletes and 762 Cadets. Great numbers for the “real” Italian sports Karate movement which in these days sees the Italian national team involved in the Senior World Championship in Budapest.

Il Funakoshi of La Spezia the renowned La Spezia association participated in both events. In Taranto in the Kata specialty (form), bronze for Daniele Moggia (former Italian Master Champion in 2020 -2022) in the Master B category (years 1979-1973) with excellent performances, in fact in the first round with the Kata Kururunfa he obtained the score average of 7.2, in the second round with the Chatanyara Kushanku kata he obtained an average of 7.5 and in the final for the bronze with the Papuren kata that of 7.7, another third place with Maurizio Pasini (years since 1957) who in the first round with the kata Gojushiho sho achieved an average of 6.6 and in the second round a 6.9 when performing the Jion kata.

Giuseppe De Giorgi stopped in fifth place in the Master D (years 1964-1958) who in the bronze final (after having passed two rounds) made an error which denied him the podium. In the women’s Cadets they had passed the regional qualification of Albissola (SV); Elisa Vauchelle and Eleonora Maggio (in their first experience in the cadet category) both in combat (kumite) at the 54 kg limit and Beatrice Herrera Morales already qualified by right as third in the Italian Beginners Championship in 2022, at the 68 kg limit. In the 54 kg category 70 athletes met, while in the 68 kg there were 22.

On Saturday, the first to take to the tatami was Eleonora Maggio (last year she placed fifth in the rookie category) against Turin’s Aurora Giordano, finishing with a defeat for the first point achieved by her opponent (result 1-1), followed by Elisa Vauchelle won over Zoe Trotto from Biella (result 2-0), then over Elena Fappiano from Brescia (result 1-0), and then stopped in the pool final against Bianca Capone from Avellino (who later became Italian Champion 2023) with the result 0 -5. At this point, in the evening, Elisa took part in the repechage to reach third place. In the first fight she overcame the Roman Daria Istrate (result 8-1), then the Como Viola Gandola (result 4-3) and then left third place to the talented Neapolitan Ilaria Bianco (result 3-8).

On Sunday it was Beatrice Herrera Morales’s turn who lost by a narrow margin in the 68 kg category (result 0-1) with Alice Quagliano from Brianza also stopped in the quarter-finals. The fifth place achieved by Elisa brings 4 national points to Funakoshi who in the Roman trip was represented by Maestro Sauro Baldiotti with 7th dan and by the Instructor Iwa Baldiotti with 5th dan who followed the girls as a coach. The training at Funakoshi, also conducted by the technicians Maestro Laura Neri with 5th dan and Coach Raffaella Capoccioni with 3rd dan do not stop in view of the Italian Junior Championship, which will be held at the PalaPellicone in Lido di Ostia and which will see Funakoshi as standard bearer again Elisa Vauchelle and the 2023 Liguria Trophy which will be held in Spotorno (SV) and which will also see new debutants take to the tatami.
