Italian Judokas Competing for Qualifying Points in European Championships for Paris 2024 Olympics

There will be 17 (eight men and nine women) Italians competing from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 November in the European Judo Championships. The matches are scheduled on the tatamis of the Arena Sud de France in Montpellier and will be crucial for scoring as many points as possible with a view to qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. On transalpine soil, in particular, they will be available until a maximum of 700 points in each weight category.

In the men’s field, Italy will be at the start with Angelo Pantano and Andrea Carlino (-60 kg), Fabio Basile and Matteo Piras (-66 kg), Giovanni Esposito and Manuel Lombardo (-73 kg), Antonio Esposito (-81 kg ) and Christian Parlati (-90 kg). In the women’s competition, Assunta Scutto and Francesca Milani (-48 kg), Odette Giuffrida (-52 kg), Veronica Toniolo (-57 kg), Flavia Favorini and Savita Russo (-63 kg), Irene Pedrotti (-70 kg) will defend the tricolor ), Alice Bellandi (-78 kg) and Asya Tavano (+78 kg). However, Elios Manzi, Gennaro Pirelli and Martina Esposito will not be in the match, all three sidelined by injuries.

In the Italian team, the spotlight is mainly on Assunta Scutto and Alice Bellandi, who currently occupy first position in their respective five-circle rankings. Both, like Odette Giuffrida (fourth in the Olympic ranking), are fresh from the success achieved last week in the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

“It is a particular and atypical European Championship – commented the women’s head coach Francesco Bruyere -. In theory it should have assigned the Olympic score at 50%, as it should have been held in the first half of 2023. In the end it was decided to change the regulations during the race and to assign the points at 100%, still inserting the event into the first qualifying period.” , concluded the Italian coach.
