IOC: Countries that exclude athletes from competitions for political reasons risk their candidacy for hosting the Olympic Games

Grabar-Kitarović highlighted that the growing politicization of sports is a problem that can be taken into account when selecting the next Olympic Games venues.

Despite the fact that she did not name the exact countries that could be affected, it is known that Poland and Indonesia have shown interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics.

Poland did not allow Russian athletes to compete in this year’s European Games, while Indonesia was stripped of the right to host the U-20 World Cup final by FIFA because it did not want to host Israel’s matches.

“We are witnessing more and more government restrictions on athletes’ access to international sports competitions. It is important that all interested parties and desired organizers commit to complying with the IOC Code of Ethics,” Grabara-Kitarović said.

She also highlighted that the IOC’s group, which liaises with potential Summer Games bids and is chaired by Grabara-Kitarović, must always be aware of any violations of the Olympic Charter.

The venue for the 2036 Summer Olympics could be chosen in 2026 or 2027, while the home of the 2030 Winter Olympics will be chosen next summer.
