IOC Congress in Mumbai: Now it’s India’s turn

The Jio World Convention Center is the largest convention center in India. And it is part of a district that has developed in recent years in Mumbai, the megacity with a population of 20 or more million, with a fairly clear task: growth. The “Growth Center”, in which the convention center is located, also includes the Jio World Plaza, the Jio World Residences, the Jio World Garden and the Jio World Drive. The mobile phone provider Jio is a big player in India. From Saturday evening onwards, Jio will host the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the congress center has a ballroom, and the 141st general assembly of the women’s and men’s Olympics will open.

99 members are invited, including one with whom IOC President Thomas Bach was traveling at the beginning of the week and who is very familiar with the Jio cosmos: Nita Ambani is a businesswoman, an IOC member since 2016 and married to Mukesh Ambani. This year, Forbes magazine listed him as the ninth richest billionaire in the world with a fortune of $83.4 billion. He heads Jio as part of the Reliance Industries conglomerate, the largest private company in the country, based in Mumbai. Telecommunications is one of Reliance’s younger divisions; Ambani’s father once developed the company into an oil and gas multinational.
