As the club announced on Tuesday, Maier sustained the injury during training on Sunday. It was a lateral ligament injury in the ankle. The FCA estimates the downtime to be “the next four weeks”. This means that Maier will probably miss the next three Bundesliga games in Cologne (November 4th), against Hoffenheim (November 11th) and at Union Berlin (November 25th).

It is unclear whether the 24-year-old would have played a sporting role. In any case, Maier hasn’t been used at all under coach Jess Thorup. In the 5-2 win in Heidenheim, Maier was at least still on the bench, most recently in the 3-2 win against Wolfsburg – the day before the training injury – the Dane did without the midfielder’s services in his squad.

Maier made his only starting eleven appearance of the current season under former coach Enrico Maaßen in the first round exit in the DFB Cup in Unterhaching (0-2); in the Bundesliga he only made three substitute appearances. In the past two years, Maier has been a regular player – the path to this distinction is now a little further.
