The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) is investing in Infinite Athlete, hoping the sports technology specialist will unlock commercial opportunities for its members.

In addition to a financial commitment, Infinite Athlete will gain access to the NFLPA’s group licensing rights and access to athletes, both of which will aid technological and commercial development.

Infinite Athlete was founded earlier this year following artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Tempus Ex Machina’s acquisition of injury analytics firm Biocore and serves as the parent company of both businesses.

The NFLPA sees a wide variety of potential use cases for Tempus Ex’s ‘FusionFeed’ AI tech, Biocore’s data science expertise, and the partnerships the company has reached to date.

“We are excited about our partnership with Infinite Athlete, which brings together the power of their FusionFeed technology and the significant value of our group player licensing rights,” said Sophie Gage, vice president of business and legal affairs at NFL Players Inc.

“By harnessing the strength of group rights, we are empowering our players and the entire NFLPA community, paving the way for innovation and accessibility in the world of sports.”

“In the past twelve months we have demonstrated, with our professional and collegiate sports partners, that our technology unlocks monetisation opportunities for athletes and sports organisations, allowing them more ownership, visibility, and creativity with their data,” added Charlie Ebersol, cofounder and chief executive of Infinite Athlete.

“We are excited to work with the NFLPA and the team at NFL Players Inc to develop new products that drive value for its membership and business partners.”

The rebranded, enlarged company has set its sights on creating the ‘operating system for sport’, a term that describes a portfolio of sports-specific innovations in the fields of media consumption, performance, fan experience, coaching and team operations, helping to drive the sector’s wider digital transformation.

Tempus Ex, which was named as one of SportsPro’s sports technology ideas to invest in class of 2023, has attracted significant media attention for its shirt sponsorship of Premier League soccer outfit Chelsea, while it has also worked with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and the Pac-12 college sports conference.

In 2021, Tempus Ex closed a Series B funding round led by private equity firm Silver Lake and Endeavor, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and appointed Arizona Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald Jr to its board of directors.

“By giving the NFLPA access to Infinite Athlete’s technology, it opens up new and previously unimagined opportunities for athlete performance and fan engagement,” said Fitzgerald Jr. “I believe it will also provide stronger brand alignment and more economic opportunities for the players.”
