“In my house there were always flags, paintings and Deportivo cups”

Víctor Eimil (Vilalba, 1999) is today a right back for Real Unión, A Coruña’s next rival in the league, and he was once one of those youth players who dreamed of arriving at Riazor, but who had to leave early. On Sunday he will become an opponent, but he has not stopped being, in part, that sportsman boy in whom his father instilled a feeling for colors, the blue and white.

Does something still stir inside you when you play against the Deportivo?

Very, very much for my father. He instilled in me from a young age that I was a member of Dépor and when I had the option of going to A Coruña to play for Dépor it was a dream. I didn’t get to debut at Riazor, I will do so in the second round, just in the last game, but playing against them is tremendous.

What Salva takes from you, Salva can give you

Was he in the Vilalba rock?

No, my father was not one to go to Riazor, but we did watch all the games. In my house there were always flags, paintings, Deportivo cups, everything. In Vilalba there is a lot of sportsmanship.

And how does that feeling mix with being told one day that you have to leave Abegondo?

It was a little tough, it was also the year of COVID. There were people who were pushing from behind like Valín or Isra (now at Bergantiños) and it is normal. In the quarry, if you can’t make the jump to the first team, then you have to make way for the people who come from below stomping hard. I wanted to get there, but maybe I wasn’t prepared and I had to take these steps that I’m taking now so who knows if one day I’ll be able to return (to Dépor). I don’t close the door to anything. There is the example of Hugo Rama. At the time I understood the club’s decision and looked for another path and I think it hasn’t turned out badly.

906 days of waiting to see Jairo

Now you are in the First Federation and Jorge Valín without a team.

Sometimes there are intermediate steps to get to the sites. They are moments, they are streaks. One day you’re at the top, another day you’re at the bottom, everything changes from one week to the next.

Did Dépor sign you from Racing?

Yes, since I was little, I started using bottles when I was three years old. I also went with the Galician team and had a good championship. They called me from Lugo and I didn’t feel comfortable and decided to stay in Vilalba. And when I was a second-year cadet, Dépor called me and I was there until the Fabril stage.

Dépor’s substitutes, faced with an opportunity to vindicate themselves

Being from Vilalba and a youth player, will Villares’ example matter?

Diego is an example of sportsmanship as a person and on the field. He had a difficult time at Fabril, he returned to Vilalba and look what he is today, a reference.

They know each other?

Of course, he is a very good friend, since he was little. I talk to him every week.

Have you already talked about the game?

Not yet. These days only for a Fantasy League player to sell me (laughs). I don’t think we’ll talk about the game until Sunday.

Mella, Martín Ochoa… Do you really think that Dépor is going to become a youth club now?

Now they have given the opportunity to Martín Ochoa and the people who come from below and I think they are taking advantage of it very well. I watch the games and he is doing very well in attack. There is nothing to say about Yeremay and I also think David Mella is going strong. These people are being given the opportunity to play and they are taking advantage of it and Dépor will say “look, we have these people down here.”

Deportivo conquers the air

And Abegondo always competed against the best…

Clear. Furthermore, the lower the first team is, the easier it is in theory, but the club can also bet on experience. You have to demonstrate everything on the field and the fundamental thing is that they perform.

Do you watch Dépor matches?

Yes, of course, from all leagues. I love football, especially Galician football. These days I will be with the Copa del Rey, with Dépor, with Lugo…

And what feeling has it left you with?

They competed very well against Nàstic, who were in good shape. He won the game and is already starting. He was in a bad streak and already had seven of nine and not against just any teams. Due to budget, squad and club and fans, it has to be as high as possible in the First Federation. We all knew he was going to start, but in the end that has to be demonstrated on the field.

Save Seville. Is it strange to hear some of the names that will be in front of you?

And Lucas Pérez, and Hugo Rama, and José Ángel, who I like a lot. They are players who come from the Second Division and are very important names in the category. It also means that the First Federation is at a very high level.

And why does it cost so much for a team with those names?

It is a very difficult question to answer. Football is about streaks, moments and now they are in good momentum and this way it is easier for the talent of those players, which is great, to come to light.

You played last season for Hércules in the Second Federation, where there is enormous pressure like in A Coruña. That feeling until you live it…

Yes, playing for Deportivo, playing for Hércules means doing it for two or three years in another team. There is extra pressure. I don’t regret the step I took last year (going to Hercules), because in football you have to live those moments to learn and I endured it very well. I’m glad I gave it, it has helped me improve in my career.

How did they start in the league?

We are very happy, the goal is to save ourselves and then look at what we can. At home we are being very strong and very reliable.
