Houston Astros Defeat Minnesota Twins 6-4 in Game 1 of American Division Series

The Houston Astros were hot, but managed to keep the game out of reach of the Minnesota Twins by winning 6-4. They take a 1-0 lead in the American division series.

Yordan Alvarez started his series off on the right foot by hitting two home runs and scoring a third run in the fifth inning. In the third, he sent Bailey Ober’s (0-1) offering over the fence, producing two points. He added more in the seventh with a solo slap that put the Astros firmly in control of the game.

Ober also had a start to forget, since he allowed the reigning champions to get their defense off to a flying start. In the first inning, Jose Altuve hit the 24th series home run of his career, which places him second in major league history, behind Manny Ramirez. In the end, the right-hander allowed three earned runs on four hits in three innings of work.

Houston increased its lead in the fifth inning. Jose Abreu hit a single that scored Alex Bregman for his second run of the game. Chas McCormick then hit a single off Kenta Maeda that scored Yordan Alvarez.

On the mound, Justin Verlander (1-0) was flawless, allowing four hits in six innings. Coming in relief of Verlander, Hector Neris screwed things up, conceding two circuits, good for four points to the Twins.

Jorge Polanco first reduced the Astros’ lead with a three-run slap. Next hitter Royce Lewis continued his strong postseason performance with his third home run of the postseason. In the defeat, Quebecer Édouard Julien hit a double and earned a walk in five appearances at the plate.
