Holger Rune Defeats Tomás Martín Etcheverry to Reach Semi-Finals Without His Trademark Cap

It took 2:42 hours for Holger Rune to defeat his opponent Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

Against the French Open quarter-finalist from Argentina, Boris Becker’s protégé showed particularly strong nerves and fended off nine out of ten break chances.

The last time Rune was in an ATP semi-final was in the Queen’s Cup in London in June.

Becker had taken over as coach of the Dane before Basel and apparently already had a visible influence on Rune. In the round of 16 against Sébastian Báez, the 20-year-old appeared on the pitch for the first time in a long time without his trademark, an upside-down cap.

“Holger tinkered with it from time to time, but Boris himself was of the opinion when playing that the fewer things disturbed the better,” confirmed mother and manager Aneke Rune to “BT”: “So no caps, necklaces and so on. Maybe Holger sees it that way now too.”

In the semi-finals, the 20-year-old will face Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime or Russian Alexander Shevchenko.

In the race for the eight places for the season finale, the ATP Finals in Turin, Rune is in eighth place. The Dane is under pressure from Shanghai Masters winner Hubert Hurkacz (Poland), who also reached the semi-finals in Basel and will play against Ugo Humbert (France) in the semi-finals.

Rune continues to win: first with difficulty, then with great speed
