Hoeneß Speaks Out: Controversial Statements on Bayern Munich’s Management and Transfers

When he speaks, there are always exciting statements.

Uli Hoeneß (71) speaks in the program “BR24 Wahl – Der Sonntags-Stammtisch” about the election in Bavaria. But then he is asked about his FC Bayern – and gets out!

Moderator Hans Werner Kilz introduces: “You have exchanged the board, sports director and coach at Bayern.”

Bayern honorary president Hoeneß interrupts: “I didn’t replace the coach.” When the moderator wants to continue, the supervisory board member adds: “Which wasn’t necessarily smart.”

The Nagelsmann dismissal was not “smart” – extremely interesting! The coach had to leave in the spring, even though Bayern still had a chance of winning all three titles. At the beginning of April, Hoeneß said about Thomas Tuchel that he considered him “the ideal solution”.

Hoeneß had already explained in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that the Nagelsmann dismissal was a solo effort by the then CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and that the supervisory board was not involved: “No, nobody. Herbert Hainer, as chairman of the supervisory board, was also informed far too late. And something like that just doesn’t work. On the Wednesday before the final separation, Hasan stood at my door and said: We want to do this, and actually we have already decided.”

Hoeneß is pleased that Julian Nagelsmann is now the national coach. “It is completely unused and has recovered well. He will now move forward at full speed.”

Hoeneß also says on the show: “The appointment of Oliver Kahn as CEO was a big mistake. And when I realized that he couldn’t do that, I decided with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and changed that.”

He explains: “We used to earn well as footballers, but we were aware that we would still have to work later to provide for the family. If a footballer plays football at Bayern for ten years, then he no longer has to work. Whether the player is prepared to work twelve hours a day, six days a week when that is no longer necessary – that is the big question.”

Kahn was released before matchday 34 last season, and Hasan Salihamidzic was released after the game.

Hoeneß concluded on the Kahn issue: “Oliver Kahn recently said in an interview: ‘A CEO doesn’t have to work 24 hours a day.’ Then I replied: ‘It should be twelve hours.’”

Bayern have now hired a sports director, Christoph Freund. There are also rumors about Max Eberl as a possible sports director. “I estimate that in the next six to twelve months we will have the personnel that the future should have. Then Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and I will retire to the supervisory board position, which is only intended to advise. At the moment, however, we also have more operational tasks until we notice that the ship is sailing straight again,” explains Hoeneß, without mentioning the name Eberl.

On top of that, he reveals that Harry Kane (30) didn’t cost 100 million after all. “We only spent 95,” smiles Hoeneß. With bonus payments, the transfer fee can increase to 120 million euros…
