Highlights from the Eighth Day of the XIX Pan American Games in Santiago 2023

Santiago de Chile, Oct 28 (EFE).- The eighth day of the XIX Pan American Games left this Saturday an unprecedented gold for Colombia in baseball, an enviable day for Brazil in judo, for Argentina the protagonist in individual tennis and outstanding performances in women’s soccer.

Below are other notable events from Santiago 2023.

1. Medal table

The leadership of the United States remains firm with 154 medals in total, after having added two bronzes in judo this Saturday to reach 61 gold, 44 silver and 49 bronze. He is followed by Mexico in second place in a close fight with Canada, whom he surpasses by three golds. The Mexican athletes have added 35-21-28 for a total of 84, while the Canadians have 32-26-30 for a total of 88.

2. Brazil rocks in judo

Brazilian judokas won four gold medals on the first day of combat in which five categories were contested: Alexia Nascimento (-48 kg), Michel Augusto (-60 kg), Larissa Pimenta (-52 kg) and Rafaela Silva (- 57 kg) rose to the top of the podium. They only missed the -66 kilos where the gold went to the Venezuelan Willis García.

3. Colombia hit it with a home run

The Colombian baseball team bathed in gold in the Pan American final by defeating Brazil 9-1, which after beating favorites like Cuba and Venezuela fell in the final game to win the silver medal.

4. Lionesses without problems

The Argentine field hockey team defeated the United States 5-1 and advanced without problems to the semifinal of the competition, in which they seek the gold medal that grants a direct ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

5. Bronze meringue

The Dominican Republic men’s duo Nick Hardt and Roberto Cid defeated the Costa Rican couple Rodrigo Crespo and Jesse Flores in the men’s tennis doubles by 7-6 (4), 4-6 and 12-10 to win the bronze medal in Santiago 2023.

6. Consolation prize

The Mexican baseball team, which was in the group of favorites to win the Pan American crown, won the bronze medal by beating Panama 10-2 this Saturday. “The expectation was always to fight for the gold medal, but this bronze gives us the opportunity to take something home, to show that there is good baseball in Mexico and that there is a future in future tournaments,” said outfielder Norberto Obeso.

7. Perfect campaign

The United States team won its three matches in the women’s soccer preliminary phase by beating Argentina, Costa Rica and Bolivia in group B, while the Mexicans are also on a perfect pace by defeating Paraguay, Chile and Jamaica in the group A to advance to the semifinals.

8. There is no bad fifth

Venezuela defeated Chile 79-70 in women’s basketball to take fifth place in the competition. The best player of the Venezuelan team in the tournament was Mariana Durán with 41 points in total.

9. Argentina for two

Argentine tennis will have two representatives in the men’s and women’s singles finals with Facundo Díaz who will face the Chilean Tomás Barrios; and Lourdes Carlé, who will face the Brazilian Laura Pigossi.

10. Surprise fall

The Chilean judoka Mary Dee Vargas was surprised in the -48 kilo category by the Colombian Erika Lasso. She was one of the podium options for the southern country in this sport, after winning bronze in Lima 2019, but she fell in her debut.
