High Stakes Showdown: Cowboys vs. 49ers in Week 5 Matchup

Dallas, United States.- The game promises emotions

On the one hand are the Cowboys thirsty for revenge after their aspirations were cut short by San Francisco in each of the last two postseasons. On the other, there are some 49ers who are looking for their 15th consecutive win in the regular season, and the last nine with the inexperienced Brock Purdy at the controls.

All-star Micah Parsons is part of a Cowboys defense that has allowed just 41 points through four games and just 13 in their three wins. For comparison purposes, Dallas’ own defense has scored 18 points so far this season.

But in front of them is an offense that has a Purdy who has not known defeat as a professional in the regular season. Running back Christian McCaffrey has 17 touchdowns in 15 games with San Francisco and has 13 straight games with at least one score.

McCaffrey scored in a 21-15 victory over Dallas in the last playoffs. San Francisco’s defense intercepted two balls from Dak Prescott and wiped out the Cowboys’ running attack.

To avoid a third consecutive loss to San Francisco, and first in the regular season in four games since 2002, Prescott and the offense must get into a rhythm. His 124 points are fourth-most in the NFL, and his only turnover of the season was part of an upset loss to the Cardinals.

PHILADELPHIA IMPARABLE LIGHT

The Philadelphia Eagles, reigning NFC champions, are one of two remaining teams with an unblemished record this season.

And it’s not too difficult to identify where their success comes from: A powerful running game, time of possession and an offense that has surpassed 400 yards in each of its last three games.

Despite this, three of their victories have been by just six points or less, including last week’s overtime victory against Washington. The Eagles have nothing but themselves to blame for their struggles this season, with a success rate of just 46% in the opponent’s final 20 yards.

It won’t be easy to correct those problems against the rejuvenated Rams, who have limited their rivals to 23 points or less in three of their four games. More importantly, they have been able to avoid long drives, ranking as the second-best defense on third down.

But even if the star Aaron Donald and the young Los Angeles defense remain up to par, the challenge will be that the powerful aerial attack led by veteran Matthew Stafford in tandem with rookie receiver Puka Nacua (39 receptions, 501 yards) find the consistency necessary to keep up step by step with Jalen Hurts and company.
