Hidetoshi Ibaraki: The Rising Star of Hanshin Tigers

Hidetoshi Ibaraki (in Japanese 茨木 秀俊 Ibaraki Hidetoshi; born June 8, 2004 in Sapporo) is a Japanese baseball player. He plays with the Hanshin Tigers (阪神タイガース “Hanshin Taigāsu”) as a pitcher.

He started playing softball in the second grade of elementary school with the Teine Young Stars (“手稲ヤングスターズ”). While attending Teine High School in Sapporo City, he played on the Sapporo Higashi Senior Baseball Club team.[1].

He left his hometown of Hokkaido to attend Teikyo Nagaoka High School in Niigata. When he entered high school, former professional baseball player Hiroshi Shibakusa took the position of sports manager. Through personal training with the manager, Ibaraki increases his maximum throwing speed from 130 km/h to 147 km/h[1]. During the summer of his third year of high school, he reached the finals of the Niigata Prefectural Tournament as an ace and faced Nihon Bunri High School. After a pitching battle that lasted 11 extra innings with opposing ace Haruya Tanaka, he suffered a defeat [2] . He would not participate in the Koshien tournament again until three years later.
