HC Lugano Defeats Geneva Servette with Convincing 7-4 Victory

Servette defeated by a wide margin (7-4). The Bianconeri took the lead thanks to goals from Arcobello (shorthand) and Marco Müller. Jooris shortens but, after Wolf’s hat-trick, Hartikainen brings the guests closer again. In the final period, the hosts spread, scoring another four goals with Fazzini, Thürkauf, Ruotsalainen and Carr. Haapala scored a double for the reigning champions. Bertaggia and Mirco M expelleduller.

Thanks to a truly convincing performance and the right attitude, throughout the entire 60′ of the game, the Bianconeri returned to success, overcoming the reigning champions Geneva with a clear score (7-4), taking the lead in the final period .

At the start of the game, Lugano immediately had a good opportunity with Carr who, after stealing the puck from Vatanen intent on leaving his defensive third, finished shorthanded just wide. The guests, on the other front, responded with a long-range shot from Jacquemet well served by Winnik. Definitely more focused than the unfortunate performance against Rapperswil, the Bianconeri tried again with an insidious shot from Mirco Müller, which however did not surprise Mayer. At minute 07:46, in a situation of numerical inferiority after Verboon’s exit, the home team capitalized on a blunder by Mayer, finding the goal with Arcobello, but the referees annulled it due to obvious offside. The American striker tries again in the next action and, arriving all alone in front of the opponent’s goal, scores the opening goal (1-0) at 08:11. Subsequently, both teams are unable to exploit a power-play situation, due to the penalties inflicted on Manninen and Morini, even if Geneva comes one step away from a draw, with a missed deflection by Filppula who, alone in front of the goal, does not he hooks the puck returned by Koskinen on Winnik’s conclusion. The Bianconeri closed the initial period on attack, trying to capitalize on the numerical superiority generated by Maurer’s exit, but, despite the vehement offensive push, they failed to pass. Mayer’s response to the threats brought by Fazzini and Ruotsalainen was excellent.

The central period opens immediately with a big chance for Joly, who misses the target with the goal wide open. Marco Müller didn’t make a mistake in the next action, however, as he managed to surprise Mayer with a wrist shot (2-0) at 21:10. Luca Gianinazzi’s team seems possessed, coming close to scoring a trio immediately after with Fazzini, who incredibly sends it wide from an excellent position. The same attacker, however, commits a naive foul against an opponent shortly after and, so, with the extra man the reigning champions manage to close the gap with a diagonal from Jooris (2-1) in the 25th minute: 32. The Bianconeri skidded only momentarily, allowing a dangerous counterattack, which Bertaggia wasted badly. It’s just an empty pass, because the hosts insist on attacking in the offensive phase, extending again thanks to a great diagonal shot from Wolf which hits under the crossbar, depositing it behind Mayer (3-1) in the minute 28:59. A hit from LaLeggia against Richard once again facilitates the visiting team who, after a failed attempt from close range by Praplan, finds the second goal in the fray with Hartikainen (3-2) at minute 36:13. A few seconds pass and a harsh intervention by Bertaggia against Morini triggers a real brawl on the ice. Bertaggia himself and Mirco Müller (very determined in defending his teammate) pay the price, ending up in the locker room early, while the Bianconeri are unable to capitalize on their numerical superiority due to Richard’s exit at the same time, thus missing a good opportunity. despite the attempt by the Finnish Ruotsalainen.

In the final period, a Vatanen-Praplan combination almost immediately defeats Koskinen. The guests, in this phase, seem to produce their maximum effort in search of the equalizer, but Fazzini’s great diagonal pushes them back again (4-2) at minute 47:40. A few seconds pass and Thürkauf, taking advantage of an error by the opposing defense, scores the goal (5-2) at minute 47:01. A hard blow for the reigning champions who however managed to take advantage of a misunderstanding between Ruotasalainen and Alatalo to get closer in the score thanks to the promptness of Haapala who surpassed his compatriot Koskinen (5-3) at minute 47:46. However, Lugano took to the track this evening and demonstrated that they were reactive and concentrated. In fact, it didn’t take much for the home team to find their way back to scoring. In fact, a combination between Marco Müller and Ruotasalainen created the conditions for the goal of (6-3) at minute 51:11. The guests, however, decide that it is not yet the time to give up, finding a way to scare the Bianconeri with Haapala’s second personal goal, caught in a good position once again by compatriot Hartikainen (6-4) at minute 54:02. Just under 3′ from the end, however, the penalties called at the same time on Haapala and Hartikainen put an end to the dispute. In fact, after a miraculous save by Mayer on Andersson, Carr put the seal on Lugano’s convincing victory (7-4). And so, the fans present at the Corner Arena, having dismissed the loud boos following the disappointing performance against Rapperswil, greeted their favorites with satisfaction, singing the classic chorus “we want you like this”, as a good omen for the difficult away match scheduled for tomorrow in Davos.
