Leipzig throws record champions Kiel deeper into the crisis – the highlights in the video

The Füchse Berlin celebrate their ninth win in the ninth game against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen and confidently defend their lead in the table. Record champions Kiel receive the next blow in the neck. Watch the games on matchday here in the video.

The frustration was deep among coach Filip Jicha and the THW Kiel handball players. The record champions and defending champions lost the away game at SC DHfK Leipzig on Saturday with 34:35 (15:16). “Overall, my team was very unclever today,” said Jicha, aptly summing up the fourth defeat of the season in the Bundesliga.

There would have been more. The Kiel team could have achieved at least a draw, but the last offensive actions fizzled out without any effect: “We have 30 seconds for the last attack, and at this moment we lack the composure to finish again,” said 41-year-old Jicha.

A look at the statistics reveals what’s wrong with the Kiel team. In the end, THW goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva had a strong 18 saves, twice as many as the Leipzig goalkeepers Domenico Ebner and Kristian Saeveraas combined. A balance sheet that could well serve as the foundation for victory. But the people of Kiel didn’t make enough of it. Hasty conclusions and technical errors played into Leipzig’s hands.

With 8:8 points from eight games, the Kiel team are clearly running behind the league leaders Füchse Berlin (18:0) and their own demands. In the entire 2022/23 championship season, THW only lost nine points in 34 games. Thinking about the 24th championship now is not an option for Hendrik Pekeler: “We are well advised to look from game to game. Then maybe we can look at the table on December 23rd and see what it looks like. But that’s no longer an issue at the moment,” the cyclist told the “Kieler Nachrichten”.

Foxes celebrate their ninth win in their ninth game

The Füchse Berlin have kept their clean slate in the handball Bundesliga. The Berliners won against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen with 38:32 (17:14) on Thursday evening in front of 7,143 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. After the ninth win in the ninth game, the capital city remains leaders. The best Berlin thrower was the outstanding Mathias Gidsel with eleven goals. For the Lions it was Juri Knorr with eight goals.

But after the break the hosts pulled ahead again and took a 30:22 lead. Because now keeper Dejan Milosavljev also shone with some important saves. But the Lions rose again and came back to 31:26 around nine minutes before the end. Berlin’s home win was no longer in danger.
