(jsg). Things were looking good for the Gießen 46ers Basketball Academy in the Youth Basketball Bundesliga. Against the slightly favored team Bonn/Rhöndorf, they were ahead 81:67 after one minute of the final quarter. But the team from Rhine caught up, equalized to 93:93 after 40 minutes and took the 105:96 win in extra time.

On the Giessen side, Louis Sutor shone again with 32 points and twelve rebounds.

The game started brightly and almost typically. While Ezra Hennig scored from the free throw line for the hosts, it was Leonard Franzen in return after an offensive rebound. In the end, almost every second missed throw from Bonn ended up in the hands of the guests. But they also had to play many minutes with foul problems; in the end, two players were fouled out and four more had accumulated four personal offenses.

The Giessen team made a total of 41 free throws, from which they generated 27 points. A first small BBA run to 14:9 gave the hosts some breathing room. Louis Sutor played a key role in this with four points, one steal, one block and one assist. This lead lasted until the Hessians threw away a few balls and Bonn’s Malik Idbihi took over. He led the guests to a 25:23 quarter lead.

As a result, it became true that basketball is a game of runs. The Bonn team gained a few points several times, but the Giessen team caught up again. After the 34:43, it was the aggressive 46ers defense that led to nine points in a row and paved the way to the 47:49 halftime score.

Gabriel Schröer allowed the Rhinelanders to pull ahead again with a three-pointer. But the 51:56 was a wake-up call for the Giesseners, who now defended more intensively and attacked the basket with a lot of effort.

Louis Sutor scored a total of 13 points in the third quarter alone and initially secured the narrow lead. The Lahnstadt team played to their individual strengths and repeatedly forced Bonn to lose the ball. However, Christoph Wysocki’s team missed a few free throws, so the lead could have been higher than 73:67 after 30 minutes.

However, it increased at the beginning of the fourth quarter as the young 46ers continued to outpower their opponents. Ball wins and nice drives led to 81:67. The Bonn team counterattacked, but after 83:78 the hosts increased their lead again and went into the last two minutes with a 91:83 lead.

But with ball losses and defensive assignment problems, the academy boys gave up the game. 96 seconds were enough for Bonn to equalize. Pascal Borgreffe’s attempt at the game winner missed – and so it went into extra time.

There, despite two fouled out centers, Bonn had more freshness and more cleverness. BBA coach Wysocki had given four players between 36 and 45 minutes of playing time, which was now clearly noticeable. In the end, a great opportunity towards the main round remained unused due to the 96:105.

On Sunday, the BBA Gießen 46ers, who are fourth in the table, will be visiting Düsseldorf.
