General Sports Authority Announces Timetable for Transformation of Sports Federations Project in UAE

DUBAI, October 17, 2023 (WAM) –

The General Sports Authority (GAS) has defined the stages and timetable for the “Transformation of Sports Federations” project, one of the three key transformation projects of the 17 included in the National Sports Strategy 2031.

In a meeting with six sports federations representing archery, judo, shooting, fencing, athletics and cycling, GAS representatives discussed the implementation of the first phase of the project, which aims to empower federations to launch initiatives that will support Emirati sports and improve the chances and results of Emirati athletes in regional and international competitions.

Executive Director of the Sports Development Sector at GAS, Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, explained that the project will gradually be extended to all sports federations in the country in order to instill in them a professional culture, develop the skills of their athletes and to adopt the performance agreements signed with priority sports federations, which will promote the growth of the sports sector and increase its contribution to the national economy, one of the three important directives of the National Sports Strategy 2031.

Sheikh Suhail also highlighted the importance of supporting the UAE sports federations, adding that GAS regularly collaborates with these federations to improve their governance, performance and institutional management. By organizing events, workshops and conferences, these federations aim to achieve exceptional sporting results and enhance the reputation of the UAE in regional and international sporting arenas. He stressed that the vision of the UAE leadership advances these efforts.

“The project aims to strengthen the operational and technical capacities of sports federations, in line with the objectives of the National Sports Strategy 2031. During its initial phase, the project will provide strategic, administrative and financial support to six federations, providing emphasis on their development, financial independence and increased capabilities. This will involve assessing their progress based on clear criteria to ensure that they are consistent with the objectives of the transformation project and the National Strategy for sport 2031,” he said.

GAS will provide daily support to the federations through a dedicated team and maintain ongoing communication with them. It will also organize specialized workshops in each federation to offer advice on the implementation of the project.
