Freiburg Secures Victory Against Augsburg After Three Games Without a Three-Pointer in the Bundesliga

Freiburg wins again after three games without a three-pointer in the Bundesliga – against favorite opponent Augsburg!

The SC beat the Fuggerstadt team 2-0. Vincenzo Grifo (5./FE.) and Philipp Lienhart (56.) score success.

Grifo at DAZN: “The penalty was the can opener. It’s just fun. We are very happy that we played a good home game.”

But it was an Augsburg player who created the scene of the game: Ex-Freiburg player Ermedin Demirovic managed the feat of poking the ball past the goal from three meters (67′). The Augsburg players react in disbelief and can hardly believe it…

Before that, the game gets off to a stormy start.

The SC received a foul penalty from referee Harm Osmers in the 3rd minute because Augsburg’s Iago Roland Sallai ran wildly into his heels.

Osmers checks a potential handball from Sallai beforehand. But the decision remains. Grifo grabs the ball – and confidently converts the penalty to make it 1-0 (5th)! The first goal of the season for the Freiburg captain.

Augsburg MUST equalize in the 9th minute. Yannik Keitel plays a back pass that is far too short. Phillip Tietz wants to go around the Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, but the SC goalkeeper can just about fend off the Augsburg striker’s shot.

Then the injury shock for Freiburg: Keitel has to go down, Merlin Röhl comes in for him (20th).

Things only get exciting again when Augsburg fans set off fireworks in the 50th minute. Referee Osmers waits for a moment, but then lets the game continue.

After a corner from Grifo, Lienhart increased the score to 2-0 with a powerful header (56th). Curious: Last season the central defender scored exactly one goal – also against favorite opponent Augsburg.

Lienhart: “It was a very intense game, there weren’t many chances. But we were very disciplined and fortunately we were able to secure a win with set pieces.”

Augsburg almost reduced the gap twice, first Demirovic missed the connection with his incredible miss (67th), then Michel scored but was just offside (80th).

Demirovic: “I don’t hit the ball like shit! Of course that hurts.”

Freiburg wins against Augsburg for the sixth time in a row and has been unbeaten against the Fuggerstadt team for ten games.

Previously, coach Christian Streich’s (58) team had not won three Bundesliga games in a row (0:5 in Stuttgart, 2:4 against Dortmund, 0:0 in Frankfurt).

Augsburg has now been winless away from home for a year. The last threesome away from home was on October 2, 2022, when the Fuggerstadt team won 4-2 at Schalke.

Freiburg moves up to eighth place in the table thanks to the win. Augsburg remains in the basement and is in 14th place with five points.
