Hirving Lozano can count on nice words from Francesco Totti. The Italian legend was in Mexico this week because he was admitted to the Football Hall of Fame in Pachuca, the city in which Lozano broke through as a professional footballer. During a press moment, Totti spoke full of praise for the PSV attacker, who, according to him, is ‘a top player’.

Totti often saw Lozano play in recent years. The Mexican played for Napoli between 2019 and 2023, where he scored 30 goals and 17 assists in 155 official matches. Lozano won the Serie A and Coppa Italia with the Italian club, after which he returned to PSV last summer.

It is a pity that Lozano no longer plays in Italy, Totti concludes. “He is an extraordinary player, a player who immediately made a difference in Italy,” the football icon told TUDN. “He won the Scudetto with Napoli, which is not easy. I consider him a top player at the moment.”

Totti, who was a guest in Pachuca together with Carles Puyol, among others, sees Mexican football growing. “Mexican football is exploding little by little, it is growing and there are players of the highest caliber. I hope to see more Mexican players in Italian football one day. For me they are very important players.”

Totti and Puyol were jointly inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Pachuca. Carlo Ancelotti, Samuel Eto’o, Xavi, Kaka and Rivaldo also received that honor this week. However, they were absent from the event in Mexico due to other commitments.

Santiago Gimenez
While Lozano receives compliments in the Mexican media as an Eredivisie player, the praise for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is tempered by an icon from his native country. Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who played no fewer than 120 international matches for Mexico, is not yet fully convinced by the 22-year-old striker of the Dutch national champions.

“I’m going to tell you one thing, with all due respect: you are talking about the Netherlands, you are not talking about the English Premier League,” Blanco said. “You have to be realistic. You are talking about the Eredivisie, which is really not a competitive league in Europe.” Gimenez scored twelve goals in his first eight league games.
