Former Transatlantic to be Transformed into New Sports Facility after Years of Neglect

Work has started on the former Transatlantic after 17 years of abandonment and degradation. In place of the old swimming pools in Via Ortles, a new sports facility will be built with a 5-a-side football field and two padel fields overlooking the recently inaugurated outdoor archery field. The construction site will last approximately seven months, the cost of the works is 800 thousand euros, part (500 thousand euros) with funding from the Lombardy Region and the rest covered with municipal resources.

The structure was inaugurated in the early 1960s and at the time of its construction it constituted an excellence in Brianza, with an Olympic swimming pool, one for children and a diving pool. The Icmesa accident, not far away, was a crucial turning point: it interrupted the functions of the structure which, from that moment on, never resumed 100 percent also due to management problems in the ’80s and ’90s. . The definitive stop came in 2006. Now, finally, the turning point. The former Transatlantic borders the Bosco delle Querce to the north and its entrance on Viale Redipuglia is strategic for users thanks to the presence of convenient car parks and connections to the west with the sports field recently entrusted to the Archers of the Bosco delle Querce , as well as the nearby multifunctional center in Viale Redipuglia, and to the east with the Sanpietrina Gymnastics gym. The site is also connected to a cycle path that serves an area of the city characterized by the presence of educational, commercial and residential structures. The construction site in via Ortles is divided into several steps. The first, also from a safety perspective, is focused on the demolition of the unsafe parts starting from the laminated wood structures. Subsequently, the demolition of the main building, the redevelopment of the fence and the construction of the new wall are planned, before proceeding with the work inside.

The project will conclude with the installation of the prefabricated buildings for the accommodation and service structures, the installation of the structures of the two padel fields and the total redevelopment of the five-a-side football pitch. All will be equipped with changing rooms and expandable refreshment areas. The new façade of the sports center will maintain some original aesthetic features of the 1960s, re-proposed in a modern key. The company in charge is completing the demolition work.

“Finally – says the mayor Alessia Borroni – there is a construction site that works daily on an area that has been left to itself for too long and for which, so far, no Administration has carried out a project. We are in the heart of an area strategic for Seveso where we are concentrating our efforts quite a bit. I am sure that this work, once completed, will bring prestige to the city and will be a new meeting point for citizens, with an eye on safety given that they will regain possession of an area that until yesterday was degraded, dirty and abandoned to itself”.
