Former Coupang Executive Finds Health and Success Through Swimming and Exercise

Yoo In-jong, former Coupang Vice President of Safety Management, posed with both arms raised at the Endless Pool ‘Swim’ in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do. After enjoying badminton and fitness for over 20 years, he started swimming in October of last year. Seongnam = Reporter Dong-ju Kim [email protected] In-jong Yoo (60), former vice president of safety management at Coupang, started swimming a year ago. He had been maintaining his health for over 20 years by playing badminton, running at the gym, and lifting weights, but he decided he needed a new workout.

“I started playing badminton in the late 1990s, and I still enjoy it to the point where I recently entered a sports competition and won a prize, but I felt my body had changed from before. Perhaps because I only used the racket on one side, my body’s balance was broken, and my knees also started to hurt. So I looked for an exercise that wouldn’t put too much strain on my body, and swimming caught my eye.”

Yang Jong-gu, former vice president of Kijayu, said that most existing swimming pools offer lessons for multiple people, and if you don’t show up at a set time, you can’t swim. So, he asked his son to find a place where he could get ‘private lessons’, and he has been learning to swim at the Endless Pool since October of last year. The Endless Pool, recently introduced in Korea, is a private swimming pool that flows water like a treadmill. It is only used for lessons as it can be used by one or two people only. He said, “It is difficult for beginners to float in the water, but because the water flows through the power of the machine, they become buoyant and float well. “And because the instructor focuses entirely on me, I can learn quickly.” “I gained balance while swimming. Swimming requires balance because you use your whole body, not just one arm or one leg. And because it uses different muscles than badminton, running, or weight training, I am seeing a completely different effect from previous exercise.”

Former Vice President Yoo began exercising in his late 30s when he was a safety manager at Samsung Corning to escape from colds that kept nagging him due to his weakened immune system. He said, “I suffered from colds even in the summer, so I went to an herbal medicine store and was told that my immune system was weakened due to stress. “He took medicine, but he thought that a healthy body would improve his immunity, so he started exercising.” In the beginning, he tried to learn tennis and swimming, but was unable to meet the set time, so he joined the badminton club active within the company. Tennis and swimming had high barriers to entry for him in terms of facilities and time utilization. It was nice to be able to play badminton at any time, even in a small space. He also enjoyed playing soccer with his company employees.

“When I was assigned to Samsung Everland in 2006, I was so busy that I couldn’t find time to exercise for a while. When I was promoted to executive in 2009, I worked overtime every day until late at night for over six months. I was so tired that I thought I was going to die. From then on, I ran for 30 minutes on the treadmill at the company fitness center every day before working overtime. “Then I felt like I could live a little longer.”

After settling down to a certain extent, I started playing badminton and soccer again. At the fitness center, I warm up, do some light weight training, and then walk and run for 50 minutes. He walks quickly for the first 10 minutes and runs at 8 kilometers per hour for the first 30 minutes. And he finishes with a 10-minute walk. He strengthened his physical strength by working out at the fitness center twice, playing badminton once or twice, and working out 3 to 4 days a week. Now I am exercising almost every day, increasing my walking and running to 1 hour and adding swimming once or twice a week.

Former Vice President Yoo, who became the first executive from a safety manager at Samsung Group, said that he was able to stay healthy and live a successful life thanks to exercise. He said, “Honestly, it is not easy to walk or run for more than 50 minutes. He initially thought it was ‘self-denial training’. However, if you persevere and do it, you will gain confidence, thinking, ‘I did it today too.’ “I feel refreshed after sweating a lot,” he said. He said, “Healthy people make healthy products.” This means that if you are healthy, you will work hard and sincerely in everything you do. The company also said, “You have to be healthy to work well,” and built bonds with employees by playing various sports, such as soccer and mountain climbing. He said, “It is best to start exercising as soon as possible. “That way, you can take care of your health early and become confident in your social life quickly,” he said.

Former Vice President Yoo recently participated in the Sports Badminton Competition held in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do and took third place in Group A of the 60s. Group A is the highest group. He said, “Honestly, I am confident in my physical strength even if I am in my 30s or 40s.” He, who recently retired from Coupang and is preparing for the ‘second act of life’, smiled brightly and said, “I am healthy so I can do anything well.”
